Passion for local food--and the lack of a straightforward resource for where to find it--led Cristal Mendlen to launch Local Yolkel late last year.
Think of it as a Yellow Pages for local-leaning businesses, with lists of Chicago restaurants, bakeries, catering companies and stores that source local products. Broken down by neighborhood and category, it's seriously useful as a quick reference for the who's and where's of Chicago's locavore movement.
The site is a revenue-free side project for Mendlen, who co-founded web-based charity fundraiser SpendForGood.com. But it will continue to be updated with new restaurants through the year, and--in the near future--a listing of farmers' markets.
Also putting local food at your fingertips; Dishes & Dirt, a resource for connecting farmers with chefs and local eaters, whose official website will launch this spring. The site will feature an extensive sourcing guide and market, event and product listings--plus stories about local farmers photographed and filmed by D&D's founder, photographer Kate Gross.
It will come together in real time at D&D's collaborative tasting and networking events ($30), which launched with a Half Acre-Kinnikinnick Farm-Nice Cream tasting party and dinner at Old Town Social in November.
A May event at Uncommon Ground is in the works, with farmers and produce from the Wisconsin farmer cooperative Green and Green.
