Travel the culinary world without leaving Chicago

We live for gastronomic exploration--but even the most intrepid diners like a little hand-holding sometimes.

The World Food Tour--a new series of dinners at ethnic restaurants across the city--was created with that idea in mind: culinary guidance from an old pro, with a healthy dose of cultural and culinary history on the side.

Each dinner is considered a "lesson." You'll try a country's emblematic dishes while a prominent member of the local ethnic community talks you through the menu and its historical roots.

At the dinner at Isla Pilipina, you'll learn Filipino history, culture, dining etiquette and how to cook longanisa sausage from TV star Lahki Siap (from the Midwest's only Filipino-American variety show, Hataw Pinoy Chicago). Jan Lorys, director of the Polish Museum of America, leads the dinner at Red Apple.

The Tour will also swing by Japan, Korea, Cuba, Afghanistan, Germany, the Balkans, Vietnam and Ethiopia--all while staying in Chicago, of course. Tickets are going quickly, so don't dally: At only $45 for both edible and intellectual nourishment, it's quite a deal.

The next journey will be to the land of spirits--that is to say, the World Spirits Tour, (tentatively) heading to bars across the city this November.
