Use Logan Square's new sustainable kitchen and event space
You've always dreamed of selling your Prairie State Pralines at the farmers' market, but that pesky little FDA says your home kitchen isn't trustworthy.
Here to help you make your goods and sell them, too (and throw a launch party for your brilliant new line) is Logan Square Kitchen, a new kitchen incubator and event space.
The LEED-certified building occupies a 1913 house next to the Blue Line's California station. Longtime Logan Square residents Zina and Nick Murray recently finished outfitting it with three commercial kitchens (which can be rented by the hour) and an event space large enough to hold a 77-person seated dinner.
The space is built from nontoxic and salvaged materials, and the kitchen is as energy-efficient as the party room is sleek. All users are expected to recycle--and even upcycle (leftover wine corks go to the Chicago Honey Co-op for use in their apiary).
Thus far, Tinycakes is making cookies in the kitchen, and the Dill Pickle Food Co-op recently used the event room to plan next month's opening.
And if your dining room is at odds with your entertainment aspirations, consider LSK for a soiree. You can't work the stove without a foodservice license, but your favorite chef or caterer can do her thing while you work the room.
