All Bark, No Bite

Drink Margo's Bark Root Beer for a good cause

Drinking a soda isn't always good for the body, but with locally made Margo's Bark Root Beer, it's at least good for the soul: All proceeds from sales benefit local animal shelters and dog-rescue organizations. And it's a great-tasting brew to boot.

The story behind Margo's Bark is as sweet as the beverage itself. Hancock Park's Oscar Youd, a 7-year-old St. James Elementary student, made root beer for a science-fair project that turned out so tasty, his family decided to bottle it. After tweaking the recipe--an all-natural blend of carbonated spring water, pure cane sugar, molasses, vanilla, herbs and spices--they ended up with a smooth, frothy root beer that's perfect on its own or served over ice cream.

With their family dog Margo as the namesake mascot, the Youds launched their first batch of root beer this spring. You can already find it at Tender Greens, Larchmont Larder and Galco's, but come July it'll also be sold at all SoCal Bristol Farms and select Whole Foods locations.
