TT Leftovers: July Edition
Some cool and tasty highlights from the month
The dog days of summer mean long, hot--really hot--days. Here are a few tips we've kept on ice for you.
• Nancy Silverton has made getting your pizza fix much easier with the new Mozza 2 Go, but don't leave without a few salads, panini--the simple roast porchetta is a hands-down favorite--and Mario Batali's amazing lasagna. Picnicking never tasted so good.
• Your humdrum salad wears a new green: Purslane (aka verdolagas) will be around for a few more weeks. The crisp, succulent leaves are great in corn or watermelon salads with feta. Or you can sauté the stems and leaves whole for a unique side dish. Try it with carne asada or salmon.
• Summer beer means more than watered-down lager and mass-produced hefeweizen. Some California brewers are adding ingredients like mountain sage, lemongrass and Thai basil to lighter ales, and producing crisp, light and very food-friendly beers.
• Buying seafood for the grill? When local chefs need the good stuff, they go to fish forager Julee Harmon. Get helpful tips from the pro on finding the best, freshest fish in town.
• Ah, s'mores: There's nothing like the smell of burnt sugar, graham cracker and chocolate to take you back to childhood innocence. But at the Nickel Diner, the classic campfire food goes extreme--with the help of a blowtorch.
