Tasting Table LA Philippe Peking duck, The Orchard, Voodoo BBQ Pork Pie

• California's spiny lobster season opened this month, and you'll see the beasts on restaurant menus and at fish markets all over town. Or buy directly from fisherman John Wilson, who sells live Santa Barbara-caught lobsters at the Hollywood farmers' market, near the Ivar and Sunset entrance, every Sunday.

• We don't really care that the Philippe Chow vs. Mr. Chow wars have hit L.A., but we do care about great Peking duck. And the new Philippe has it. Whether it's for one or a group, the beautifully lacquered bird with glistening, crisp skin is the reason to go.

• Apple cider is a treat this time of year, but instead of serving it warm, try it in a cocktail. The new "Appletini" is made with fresh apple juice or cider, herbs and even maple syrup. The Orchard at Akasha is a perfect taste of fall.

• At her new Melrose Ave. wine shop, DomaineLA, Jill Bernheimer tastes and selects every bottle in stock, so she can personally recommend anything for every budget. She even crafted a special Tasting Table pack--buy three bottles, get the fourth for $1.

• Carrie Umlauf puts the barbecue in pork pie. Or rather, she puts barbecue in potpie form. Her Voodoo barbecue pork pie is exactly what you need on cooler nights--rich, sweet-smoky shredded pork in a flaky, buttery crust. Find it and other Frankie & Tiny's pies every Saturday at the Silver Lake farmers' market.
