Veritas wants you to love Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Most of us know Veritas as the restaurant with the prodigious wine list of 3,300 selections that range from verticals of impossible-to-find Burgundies to famed Bordeaux, such as Chateau Latour 1929.
This fat tome is courtesy of Veritas owner, Park B. Smith, one of the world's top wine collectors; he's currently sitting on 192,000 bottles, give or take.
But after years of omnivorously collecting trophy wines, Smith has settled on one true love in his personal life: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, from France's southern Rhône region.
And he wants to you to fall in love with CdP, too. Until the end of summer, Veritas is offering deep discounts on two dozen of the region's best wines (all red) from some of its top producers, including Chateau de Beaucastel, Domaine de la Mordorée and Domaine Pontifical.
"Châteauneuf is an incredibly versatile wine," says Veritas wine director Tim Kopec. "It's rich and full-bodied, yet food-friendly." The blend's dominant grape, Grenache, helps these wines stay light on their feet, so as to not overpower the French-inflected cuisine of Veritas's chef, Grégory Pugin.
Warning: Even at the cut-rate price, CdP still ain't cheap; expect to pay $85 and up for a bottle. But if you, like Smith, have fallen in love with this "wine-lover's wine," you're already dialing the reservation line.
Veritas, 43 E. 20th St. (between Park Ave. S. and Broadway); 212-353-3700 or veritas-nyc.com
