French Tip

Party like it's 1959 at this Midtown mainstay

In this unforgiving era of shuttered restaurants, an establishment that stands the test of time is a rare thing indeed. And certainly, one that's lived through half a century deserves a serious celebration.

Since opening in 1959, Brasserie has been a touchstone for straightforward and delicious French cuisine in Manhattan, and to mark its 50th anniversary, the restaurant is hosting a series of special events.

The celebration kicks off on September 17 with A (Free) Taste of Brasserie lunch from 11:30 a.m. to  2:30 p.m. While reservations are completely booked for this event, Brasserie's futuristic bar stools are still available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Additionally, Brasserie will be launching a late-night dinner menu ($19.59 for three courses, available after 9 p.m. through the end of the year), which includes the reinstated famous Brasserie Burger, served on a crusty, garlic-buttered baguette with Gruyère and Swiss cheeses.

But the pièce de résistance at the ultramodern restaurant (redesigned by Diller + Scofidio in 2000) comes on September 30, with a five-course retrospective dinner ($95), with each dish inspired by a decade of the restaurant's history.

And for three Tasting Table subscribers, chef Luc Dimnet is offering a three-course dinner with wine pairings for two--compliments of the house--any time before October 31, 2009. Click here for a chance to win.

Whether you're an old regular or first-time diner, the time to go is now: Like the best things, this spot has only gotten better with age.
