Deep Cuts
'Inoteca offers coveted wines at fire-sale prices
Brothers Jason and Joe Denton have compiled one of the city's best Italian-wine lists at the Third Ave. location of their 'Inoteca restaurant.
Thanks to their expertise, we've never had trouble finding a great bottle within our price range to go with chef Eric Kleinman's hearty Italian dishes.
But it's the bottles out of our price range we've always lusted after, like the 1977 Tenuta Col d'Orcia Brunello, say, or the legendary 1996 Giacomo Borgogno Barolo Riserva.
Now ‘Inoteca is offering one of the best wine specials in town: Joe has assembled a list of his favorite deep cuts (including the two bottles above), which are available at their ridiculously low wholesale prices every night between 1 and 3 a.m.
This late-night steal has already caught the attention of the city's wine directors and sommeliers who frequently drop in after work to take advantage of these high-end bargains.
But if you're not a sommelier, here are Joe's three picks for bottles worth the splurge:
2002 Romano DalForno Valpolicella ($150) Denton fingers this bottle as the king of Amarone, with big, juicy tannins and notes of dried figs and dark chocolate.
1996 Giacomo Borgogno Barolo Riserva ($86) Though still relatively young, this Piedmont wine provides a traditional Barolo experience with gripping tannins and dark fruit flavors.
1967 Angelo Gaja Barbaresco ($400) An amazing expression of older Nebbiolo, this is still drinking beautifully, with soft tannins, bright fruit and a hint of rose petals.
