Servings:
2 cups
Ingredients
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup cocoa powder
  • 2 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons strong, cooled coffee
Directions
  1. In a large bowl or stand mixer, add the butter and the vanilla extract, then sift in the cocoa powder using a fine mesh sieve. Beat the ingredients together until a smooth paste has formed.
  2. Begin to add the powdered sugar to the mixing bowl, about ½ cup at a time, making sure to sieve it to get rid of any lumps. Beat slowly at first, then gradually increase the speed as the sugar incorporates.
  3. When roughly half of the sugar has been incorporated, add the cooled coffee to the bowl and mix it in.
  4. Gradually beat in the remaining sugar and then, if the buttercream is a little stiff, add a splash of the milk to moisten the consistency. The frosting should be smooth and glossy.
  5. Pipe the frosting onto cupcakes, cakes, or use as desired.
