A Sommelier Explains The Ideal Way To Order Wine At A Restaurant
BY MICHELLE WELSCH
Whether you regularly enjoy wine or are new to the drink, you might occasionally need help choosing wine at a restaurant, so follow these tips from a sommelier.
Scott Mattson, sommelier and co-owner of Denver's Nocturne Jazz & Supper Club, says that you shouldn't feel pressure to pick the 'perfect' bottle, but rather be open to options.
Mattson advises that you be honest with your sommelier or server and trust them to help you, noting, "Always communicate as simply and honestly as possible."
He advises ditching the wine terminology, saying, "We really don't need to impress one another with wine knowledge, I just want to help you drink something delicious."
However, it can be helpful to have a few descriptors of wine you like, from fruity and floral to crisper with more mineral notes so you can find something that fits your tastes.
