Balvenie Single Malt Scotch's Most Expensive Bottle Is Aged Decades
BY MICHELLE WELSCH
The Balvenie Sixty, a single malt whisky aged for 60 years in the Scottish Highlands, is the distillery's oldest release and was first sold in 2022 for $145,000 per bottle.
The whisky was casked in 1962 when distiller David C. Stewart began his career. Stewart helped design the Glencairn glass that has cemented itself in whisky-tasting experiences.
One oak cask that had previously been used to age Oloroso sherry multiple times was used to age the Balvenie Sixty. The single barrel held enough liquid to fill only 71 bottles.
Tasting notes include leather, oak, and toffee layers with a nose of lavender and heather. Those with trained palates have also detected roasted coffee and spiced candied orange.
