Can You Put Grill Grates Into The Dishwasher?
By ARRON LEUNG
Utmost care is required to keep your grill in the best shape possible, which means properly cleaning and maintaining those trick grill grates. After several consecutive uses, grill grates gather up quite a collection of burnt-on food debris, which can catch on fire when exposed to high temperatures.
Unfortunately, putting your grill grates in the dishwasher is a shortcut that just doesn't work — the amount of heat produced by the water and air cycles in a dishwasher is likely to warp and rust your grates. The damage will go both ways, since clumps of food and grease glued to the grates can clog the dishwasher.
To clean your grates properly, preheat the grill to loosen any gunk, then clean with a sturdy grill brush or a ball of aluminum foil and dispose of remnants responsibly, since rinsing them down the sink will clog it. Preventing build-up is the best cleaning method, so coat the grill with oil before cooking and removing residue after each use.
