Ina Garten's Simple Trick For Topping Bread Pudding
By NATASHA BAILEY
Bread pudding is the ultimate comfort dessert that brings together some classic crowd-pleasing ingredients. Most bread pudding is made from stale pieces of bread soaked in a custardy mixture of eggs, milk, sugar, and flavorings, then baked in the oven, and the Barefoot Contessa Ina Garten has a great topping idea to take it to the next level.
There are many ways to spice up your bread pudding, including caramel, whipped cream, chocolates, liquor, and crème anglaise. Garten prefers the latter sauce, which is traditionally a runny custard made of egg yolks, cream, sugar, and vanilla, but the celeb chef has a great trick for an instant sauce that's just like real crème anglaise.
Garten makes a version of shortcut crème anglaise by melting a scoop of vanilla ice cream and drizzling it around or on top of the warm bread pudding. She explains that vanilla ice cream is basically frozen crème anglaise, so don't feel bad about taking advantage of this exceedingly easy hack that tastes almost too good to be true.
