Is There A Difference Between Yellowtail And Yellowfin Tuna?
BY JOHN TOLLEY
While no one would blame you for confusing yellowtail with yellowfin tuna, the two are very different fish, starting with the fact that yellowtail isn't even a type of tuna.
Despite the similar name to yellowfin tuna, yellowtail isn’t actually tuna. Rather it belongs to a family of fish called amberjacks and has a succulent, rich flavor and texture.
You might confuse the two because yellowtail, also called Japanese amberjack, is popular among sushi chefs just like yellowfin since it can be eaten raw or cooked.
However, yellowfin has a complicated sustainability record, so to ensure your yellowtail isn't overfished or harming wild populations, look for BAP or ASC labels.
On the other hand, yellowfin is a type of tuna with a firm texture and mild flavor. Compared to other tuna, like bluefin, yellowfin is much more affordable.
Both yellowtail and yellowfin tuna are rich in nutrients like omega-3s and B vitamins, but can also contain high levels of mercury, a known neurotoxin.
