Jane Austen's Favorite Dinnertime Dish Is Still A Classic

While many famous authors are known for their extravagant tastes, Jane Austen seems to have had a somewhat humble taste. One of her favorite meals was a cheese toastie.
Based on a recipe from Martha Lloyd, a close friend of the author, Austen preferred her cheese toastie to be made with grated cheese, an egg, mustard, and butter grilled on toast.
Lloyd's recipe does not specify the type of cheese to use, but the Austens made their own cheese, which could have been used in Jane's cheese toasties at home.
