Lindt Chocolate Just Admitted To A Marketing Lie
BY Nancy Parode
In defending its claims that its chocolate is safe to consume, Swiss chocolate manufacturer Lindt & Sprüngli essentially admitted that its claims of excellence are untrue.
Per an Agence France-Presse (AFP) article published on Barron's website, Lindt is facing a U.S. class action lawsuit in the New York District Court's Eastern Division.
Filed in February 2023, the lawsuit alleges that Lindt Excellence Dark Chocolate 70% Cocoa and Lindt Excellence Dark Chocolate 85% Cocoa bars have deceptive labeling.
While the bars’ wrappers claim they are "expertly crafted with the finest ingredients," unsafe levels of cadmium and lead were found in the 70% and 85% cocoa bars, respectively.
The labels delude buyers into deeming the bars safe, per the plaintiffs hailing from six U.S. states. In Lindt's defense, its attorneys said it uses inflated claims to boost sales.
The lawsuit arose after Consumer Reports published the results of its dark chocolate tests in February 2022. Lindt's attorneys continue to claim that its products are safe to eat.
