The unique concoction seemed to gain popularity in 2009 when a circulating YouTube video of an Appalachian folk song by The Stanley Brothers reached millions of viewers.
The drink really took off at a 2017 Kentucky bartender retreat, which happened around the same time that Matthew McConaughey represented it in a Wild Turkey advertisement.
