Oil-Packed Vs Water-Packed Canned Tuna: Which Is Right For You?
BY AMANDA BERRILL
Canned tuna is a versatile pantry staple, but depending on what you're using it for, your recipe might be better served with either oil-packed or water-packed tuna.
Oil-packed tuna contains more selenium and vitamin D, while water-packed tuna retains more omega-3s. Both contain high sodium content and can have potential mercury content.
The biggest difference comes down to flavor. Oil-packed is usually milder and is best when you're eating it as-is, while water-packed is best for recipes with additional flavors.
With oil-packed, you can reuse the oil for dressings or as a finishing oil. Pair the tuna with crusty bread alongside a niçoise salad dressed in the oil from the can.
Since water-packed tuna has a more pronounced flavor that isn't obstructed by oil, it's great for absorbing additional flavors and seasonings in dishes like tuna salad.
