Initially limited to that and eight other products from the same line, the outbreak was bad enough that the recall was expanded to 7 million additional pounds within four days.
This affected 71 different Boar's Head products produced over three months. By the end of the outbreak, people in 19 states had gotten sick, and 10 had died.
While the company said the outbreak was related to a process used only for liverwurst, its plant in Jarratt, Virginia, had more than 70 reports of larger unsanitary conditions.
These reports go back years and include a host of problems like live green and black mold. Boar's Head eventually closed the plant and ended its liverwurst production.
