The Madras is a simple concoction of vodka, cranberry juice, and orange juice that was highly popular in the 1980s, and is supposedly named after Madras plaid, a popular textile pattern at the time. This simple-to-make cocktail should be a go-to for home mixologists, and its light and fruity flavor makes it suitable for any hour of the day.

Since vodka is a bar-cart staple, and orange and cranberry juice are common household mixers, you might already have the ingredients for a Madras. The basic recipe calls for a shot of vodka, three parts cranberry juice, and one part orange juice, a ratio you can tweak to fit your personal tastes and mix with or without a shaker.

If you have a cocktail shaker, pour in 1 ½ ounces of vodka, 1 ounce of orange juice, and 3 ounces of cranberry juice, throw in some ice and shake well, then strain it into a highball glass over ice. If you don’t have a shaker, simply mix the ingredients together in a highball glass with ice before topping with your favorite fruity garnish.
