The Martini Variation That Was Julia Child's Favorite Cocktail
BY LISA CURRAN MATTE
A true bon vivant with a bawdy sense of humor, beloved chef Julia Child was known for her larger-than-life personality, ribald wit, and clever repartee. She was very vocal about the food and drink that she liked and disliked, and she often sang the praises of gin, which stars in her favorite martini and favorite cocktail overall.
Gin and steak is a classic pairing, and Child loved the liquor paired with red meat, which explains her favorite cocktail: an Upside-Down Martini. This vermouth-forward take on a traditional gin martini consists of five parts vermouth to one part gin, served with a lemon twist, and Child preferred hers with French Noily Pratt vermouth.
Noily Pratt brand ambassador Shannon Pratt states that “When I think of Julia Child, I think of how she loved all things French. This is the original French vermouth and she made it American by adding gin, in a way.” Considering that Child popularized French cooking in America, her favorite drink containing French vermouth is fitting.
