The Nutty Ingredient Ina Garten Adds To Coffee Cake
By MEGGAN ROBINSON
Celebrity chef Ina Garten, who has starred in "Barefoot Contessa" on Food Network for 20 years, is known for sharing simple but indispensable cooking tips to make good recipes even better. Garten's version of coffee cake mostly keeps things simple, but includes one crucial ingredient for layers of flavor.
Coffee cake is a humble but delicious baked good, and Garten elevates the cake just a little higher by adding walnuts for flavor and texture. She adds plenty of chopped walnuts to both the coffee cake's middle layer and the crumbly streusel topping for a gorgeously golden brown, nutty, and crunchy finish.
The only other slightly unconventional ingredient in Garten's recipe is sour cream, but this tangy dairy product is actually used in many cake recipes to add moisture. Garten also calls for cake flour, vanilla, butter, baking powder and soda, cinnamon, salt, and brown sugar to make a truly transcendental coffee cake.
