The Secret Ingredient To Elevate Your Graham Cracker Crust
By LAUREN ROTHMAN
If you love to bake pies or just love to eat them, you're definitely familiar with sweet and crispy graham cracker crusts. These crusts are much easier to make than flaky pie dough, requiring only graham crackers, butter, and sugar, but Tasting Table recipe developer Kate Shungu adds a secret ingredient for even more flavorful results.
Shungu adds a little lemon zest to the standard mix of crushed graham crackers, melted butter, and sugar. She explains that "The lemon zest provides a hint of citrus that really nicely complements a variety of fillings," especially "creamy pie fillings such as banana cream pie, chocolate cream pie, or even key lime pie."
This more interesting version of a graham cracker crust is almost as effortless as a standard recipe. After blitzing your graham crackers in the blender or crushing them by hand, then adding the butter, sugar, and lemon zest, just press the crust into a pie pan and see how it elevates your favorite easy pie recipe.
