The Shortcut Ingredient To Use In Your Spanish Rice
By ABBY SMITH
Spanish rice is a rice dish cooked with spices and other flavorings that turn it a deep red color. This rice is undoubtedly delicious, but most recipes use more ingredients than you'd think and involve time-consuming, labor-intensive steps — fortunately, Tasting Table recipe developer Miriam Hahn's recipe is different.
Hahn's recipe cuts your cooking time and ingredients list in half. Instead of using onion, garlic, tomatoes, cilantro, and peppers separately, she simply uses salsa, which contains all of these ingredients in one and doesn't require hours of chopping and mixing; your Spanish rice will be on the table in 30 minutes.
Hahn advises to mix the salsa with the toasted rice and water, stir it, cover it, and cook for 20 minutes; she also adds cumin rather than the traditional saffron, for a more affordable but just as tasty twist inspired by Mexican rice. Finally, Hahn suggests a classic garnish of chopped red onions and fresh cilantro on top.
