The Spicy And Sweet Condiment To Elevate Your Cheese Board
By KAREN HART
When it comes to cheese boards, the possibilities are endless, and bread, crackers, fruits, nuts, olives, meats, and condiments can all make great partners for your artisan cheese. If you want to go beyond the typical honey, jam, and mustard and liven up your cheeseboard, you’ll want to try this sweet and spicy condiment.
The condiment your cheese board is missing is Italian mostarda, described by A Family Feast as fresh and dried fruits bathed in a "mustard-flavored syrup." Though mostarda was originally served alongside boiled meats, its fruity and spicy flavor pairs well with cheeses like chèvre, Gouda, Pecorino Romano, and more.
There are several different kinds of mostarda; mostarda cremonese uses a mix of fruits, mostarda mantovana uses a single fruit, and in the Veneto region of Italy, you’ll find mostarda pureed into a spreadable jelly texture. Apples, cranberries, and apricots are just a few common fruits you may find in your jar of mostarda.
