The Way You Should Be Grinding Beans For French Press Coffee
BY RYAN CASHMAN
When brewing with a French press, coffee beans need to be ground finely enough to produce a strong flavor, but coarse enough to be caught by the filter instead of passing through.
In an optimal grind, the coffee granules should be roughly the size of flakes of sea salt, which can be achieved with a manual hand grinder or an automatic grinder.
Since the French press is an immersion brewing method where the coffee is in contact with the water for a longer period of time, larger granules help to extract a better flavor.
Also, when you press down on the coffee, grounds that are too fine could slip past the filter and end up in your mug. The right grind produces a full-bodied, aromatic drink.
