The World's Most Expensive Grilled Cheese Sandwich Is Rarely Available To Order
By CATHERINE RICKMAN
Even if you try your best to imagine the world's most expensive grilled cheese, you might still be shocked at the $214 price tag on the grilled cheese at restaurant Serendipity3.
Serendipity3 on NYC's Upper East Side, known for its absurdly-priced gimmick desserts, has held the Guinness World Record for the most expensive sandwich in the world since 2014.
Many of Serendipity3's extravagant creations, including the grilled cheese, are often only offered for a limited time, and they’re only brought back to the restaurant on occasion.
In honor of National Grilled Cheese Day, the restaurant is still offering "The Quintessential Grilled Cheese Sandwich" on its online menu as of April 2023.
The sandwich is made with French Pullman champagne bread, which is like beer bread if a cup of Dom Pérignon was thrown into the dough instead of Heineken.
There are also 23k gold flakes in the bread and lining the edges of the sandwich. The Quintessential Grilled Cheese Sandwich is also made with truffle butter.
Its gooey cheese, Caciocavallo Podolico, is from Italian cows that only eat fennel, licorice, juniper, laurel bay, and wild strawberries, and they produce milk two months a year.
The sandwich comes with a dipping bisque made from the best lobster tails around, sourced from South Africa and blended with San Marzano tomatoes, crème fraiche, and truffle oil.
Both the sandwich and the accompanying bisque are also served in fine crystal. Diners must give two days notice if they wish to try the world's most expensive grilled cheese.
