This Is The Oldest Family-Owned Grocery Store In The U.S.
By SHAYE GLISSON
Even with giant grocery stores around the country, nothing can beat the charm of old mom-and-pop stores. Doud’s Market is one of these faithful businesses, offering affordable food staples, grab 'n' go items, local fare, and beverages.
Doud's Market is the number one specialty food market in Mackinac Island, Michigan, and it also holds the title of the oldest grocery store in America. This 130-year-old food market has 4.5 stars on TripAdvisor, and one reviewer raves, "Doud's has been a staple on Mackinac Island for decades and is well-stocked."
The family-run grocery store, originally named Doud’s Bros., was opened by brothers James and Patrick Doud, and was eventually changed to Doud's Mercantile. Today, the fourth generation owner, Andrew Doud, operates Doud's Market, which now includes a deli that carries breakfast, lunch, and dinner fare, along with pizza, snacks, beverages, and pre-made sandwiches.
The Doud family worked with local artist Kate Dupre to create a Picnic Map of Mackinac Island that can be viewed at the Doud's Market and Deli and Little Luxuries. Customers can take a walk through Doud's history by looking at historic images on the walls while shopping.
