What Does It Mean To Order Bourbon 'Neat' Vs. 'On The Rocks'?
By MICHELLE WELSCH
Drinkers have two main options when ordering bourbon at a bar. Besides asking for a certain brand or specifying how much you want, you can get bourbon "neat" or "on the rocks."
Ordering bourbon neat will get you room-temperature bourbon in a snifter or tulip-shaped glass. The drink can be more aromatic and release more flavor as it continues to warm up.
Bourbon on the rocks is poured over ice in an old-fashioned glass. This can dilute the flavor, but this is good for beginners or those who don't like overbearingly strong drinks.
You can also tell the bartender if you prefer one type of glass. Tulip-shaped glasses can elevate the nose of the bourbon, while an old-fashioned glass can help open up flavors.
