What Happens If You Accidentally Eat A Fish Bone?
BY ELIZABETH OKOSUN
If you enjoy eating a whole fish, you may have had the uncomfortable experience of finding a fish bone in your throat, which you may then try to cough up or swallow down.
Whatever route you take, it's bound to hurt all the same. If you force it down, it's normal to have some lingering pain right after, but if it doesn't go away, seek a doctor.
A scratch on the throat is normal but a scratch in the uvula or, in rare situations, damage to your esophagus — marked by chest pains or swelling — requires medicinal attention.
To help swallow the bone more easily, chug it down with water or drink olive oil to lubricate the throat. Soda, apple cider vinegar, or sticky food like soaked bread may also work.
