What Makes Buffalo Trace Bourbon's Barrels Unique?
BY NIKITA EPHANOV
Bourbon is a quintessential American spirit, and Buffalo Trace is one of the country’s best bourbon distilleries, thanks in part to the unique barrels it uses for aging.
Although the specifics aren’t released to the public, we know that Buffalo Trace barrels are made of white oak that is charred and aged for six months before holding any liquor.
The barrels add a spiced taste with notes of clove and rye. While most bourbon is a mix from different barrels, you can buy single-barrel expressions to taste the nuances.
Buffalo Trace doesn’t reuse the barrels after each batch; their used barrels are sold. Each has a capacity of 53 gallons that brewers can use to age beer, wine, or cider.
