Just like grapes, which come in a myriad of sizes, shapes, and flavor profiles, there’s a remarkable variety among raisins, including special red "flame raisins."
Flame raisins are made by sun-drying flame grapes, resulting in large, plump, rich raisins with a flavor profile comparable to common black or purple raisins, but slightly sweeter.
While raisins have been eaten since 1873, flame grapes weren’t even grown for commercial use until 1973. These beautiful red raisins are now being recognized for their amazing flavor.
Flame raisins work well as a snack on their own, or mixed into trail mix, salads, entrees, oatmeal, baked goods, or whatever else you would use black raisins for.
Flame raisins are not as common in grocery stores as other varieties. If you find them, store them in an airtight container in a cool, dark, dry area for up to six months.
Rich in antioxidants and low in calories, raisins are a healthy snack, but don’t go overboard, because their high fiber content can lead to cramps, gas, bloating, and more.
