What's The Difference Between Yellowfin And Albacore Canned Tuna?
BY WENDY LEIGH
Canned tuna is a pantry staple you can easily dress up or down, and two common options are yellowfin and albacore tuna, which each have their own unique characteristics.
Albacore tuna is a migratory tuna present throughout the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans. It's highly desirable as a tinned fish for its mild flavor and white flesh.
Albacore tuna is often considered the best type of canned tuna because of its mild flavor, which is less "fishy" than other canned tuna, and its firm, hearty texture.
Also known as ahi, yellowfin tuna is commonly canned with skipjack tuna, but it more often appears alone as "gourmet," "tonno," "select," and "premium" tuna.
Yellowfin has pink flesh and a richer, meatier flavor with a slight sweetness. It's naturally more tender than albacore and can even become velvety when packed in olive oil.
Like albacore, yellowfin is rich in omega-3s, selenium, and vitamins B and D. Both fish contain mercury but remain in the FDA's "Good Choices" category compared to other fish.
