Atlantic cod has been overfished to the point of being vulnerable to extinction. Before ordering it at a restaurant, ask your server if it's sourced from a sustainable fishery.

For Atlantic cod harvested off the coast of the U.S., you’ll want assurance that it’s pole-and-line caught either from Georges Bank or the Gulf of Maine.
If the restaurant values transparency, your server will likely be ready, willing, and able to answer questions. If they don't know, they'll be happy to check with the chef.
If a restaurant cannot guarantee their Atlantic cod is pole-and-line caught from those locations, the sustainable choice would be to choose something else from the menu.
