Just Splendid
The Heartland's best ice cream comes to Brooklyn
You're going to want to meet this new Midwest transplant: Jeni Britton Bauer, whose luscious small-batch ice creams have earned acclaim in her home state of Ohio, is now bringing her frozen confections to NYC.
Bauer makes her Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams with produce from nearby farms, nuts and coffee from local roasters, and organic milk and cream from small, family-run dairies. Her high standards and knack for perfecting classic flavors (and creating clever new combinations) are what set her pints apart from the rest.
Dumbo's Foragers Market will stock Bauer's year-round favorites like dark chocolate, pistachio, black coffee, Thai chili and the best-selling, can't-miss salty caramel. Seasonal offerings will vary week by week, depending on what fruits and herbs the chef finds most inspiring; flavors might include decadent combos like strawberry buttermilk and goat cheese with roasted cherries. You might also find tangy lemon frozen yogurt with blueberries and airy sorbets like beet and chocolate (inspired by Red Velvet cake) or Japanese cucumber and sake.
At $10 per pint, the price is a little steep, but once you taste the freshness and purity of Jeni's flavors, you won't mind. And the cheerful hand-written label? Consider it a little love note from Ohio.
