Meijer Recalls Chocolate Almonds In Multiple States Due To Allergen Risk

Meijer, the Michigan-based retailer that manages a roster of 500 superstores, neighborhood markets, and express locations throughout the midwestern United States, issued a recall of Frederik's Dark Chocolate Almonds and Meijer Express Go Cup Dark Chocolate Almonds on May 23 (via the FDA). The recall notice for the products supplied to Meijer by Lamontagne Chocolate Corp. includes an allergy alert because the products may contain milk that is not listed as an ingredient on the product label.

The recall specifically targets stand-up pouches of the 12-ounce Frederik's Dark Chocolate Almonds (UPC 7-08820-68730-1) and 7.5-ounce Express Go Cup Dark Chocolate Almonds (7-60236-19787-4) sold at Meijer stores and express locations in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, and Wisconsin regardless of date code. Meijer has not received any customer complaints or claims of illness associated with this recall to date; however, those who are allergic or sensitive to milk may experience a serious or life-threatening reaction if they consume any of these foods.

Return for a full refund

According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of an allergic reaction to milk may include wheezing, vomiting, hives, and digestive issues. Anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction to an allergen that triggers a sudden drop in blood pressure and causes airways to narrow, potentially cutting off breathing, may occur in the most severe cases. Per the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, approximately 16 million U.S. adults have some form of food allergy, so it's best to proceed with caution.
