How To Tell If Your Food Is Safe After A Power Outage
This trick will come in handy if the power goes out
Evacuating during a hurricane or any major storm is never a bad idea. But how will you know that the food you left behind in your fridge is safe to consume when you come back? Everything may seem OK when you return, but it's possible that the power went out (for an unknown amount of time), re-cooling your bacon and Brie as if nothing happened.
To know whether or not the power went out during the storm, place a cup of water in the freezer and freeze it solid, then put a quarter on top of the ice. If the quarter is at the bottom of the cup when you get back, it means all the food defrosted and refroze while you were gone, and is probably not safe to eat. If the quarter is in the middle or still on top, your food may still be OK.
