Why Sweet Loren's Sugar Cookie Dough Is Being Recalled
Fans of gluten-free baked goods might be impacted by the latest nationwide cookie dough recall. The voluntary food recall was issued by Sweet Loren's, a New York City-based edible cookie dough company with a line of plant-based, gluten-free confections like Chocolate Chunk, Birthday Cake, and Fudge Brownie cookie doughs. "Every product we offer — today and tomorrow — is crafted with clean, plant-based, gluten-free, dairy free, and Non-GMO ingredients," the company's website proclaims.
The recall, which was posted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) website, revolves around a single batch of Sweet Loren's Sugar Cookie Dough over concerns that the product contains trace amounts of gluten. The confectionery company first discovered the presence of the allergen during routine in-house product testing.
The test found that the oat flour used to make the sugar cookie dough contained traces of gluten, despite the fact that the flour was certified to be gluten-free. According to Sweet Loren's, none of the brand's other products were impacted by the contaminated oat flour.
The recalled dough was distributed across the country
"People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to gluten potentially run the risk of an allergic reaction if they consume these products," Sweet Loren's wrote in the recall. Despite the potential allergen risks, thus far, no illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported as a result of the recalled product.
The impacted products include 12 ounce packages of Sweet Loren's Sugar Cookie Dough marked with the Lot Code "AF22 115" with a best by date of December 1, 2022. The product was distributed to grocery stores in 26 states and districts, including Florida, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, South Carolina, North Carolina, Oregon, Utah, Illinois, Georgia, California, Colorado, Washington, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Tennessee, Alabama, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Arkansas, Alaska, and the District of Columbia.
All customers who have purchased the impacted sugar cookie dough — particularly those with severe gluten intolerances — are encouraged to return the product at your place of purchase for a full refund. If you think you may be experiencing an allergic reaction as a result of consuming the dough, seek medical treatment immediately.
