The New And Unexpected Treat That Features French's Mustard
In celebration of National Mustard Day on August 6, French's is teaming with Dough Doughnuts to offer a one-day-only special-edition doughnut. Per a press release, the unusual combination features a yeast doughnut topped with yellow mustard icing and finished with a cake crumb crown.
"We've been known to go big for National Mustard Day," said Jill Pratt, chief marketing officer, McCormick, recalling previous mustard-centric creations, including mustard ice cream (2019), mustard beer (2020), and mustard buns (2021). "This year, we're excited to collaborate with Dough and introduce French's Mustard Donuts."
Pratt suggested the newfangled approach to mustard in the morning will open doughnut and mustard fans' minds to experiment with unexpected flavor combinations, adding, "[We] cannot wait to reinvent breakfast this year."
Dough Doughnuts owner, Steve Klein, is equally enthusiastic — and Klein knows doughnuts. The one-time classmate of Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz got into the doughnut business relatively late in life when he opened a small business in Brooklyn's Bed-Stuy neighborhood (via This Is Queensborough). And less than a decade later, Dough Doughnuts has seven locations in Greater New York City and counts celebrities Chrissy Teigen, Stephen Colbert, and Brooklyn Jets Kevin Durant among its fans.
A surprising flavor combo
According to a statement released by French's, the collaboration with Dough Doughnuts came about when French's approached Klein about creating a celebratory doughnut. Dough Doughnuts was up for the challenge.
"Here at Dough, we've always prided ourselves in creating unexpectedly delicious flavors," Klein said, via the press release. "French's Mustard Donuts presented an opportunity to be imaginative and we couldn't be more pleased with the results. The iconic tanginess of French's Classic Yellow Mustard complements the sweet glaze and fluffy texture of the doughnut for the perfect bite."
The limited-time doughnut builds on Dough Doughnut's signature brioche recipe — which means it's by no means a mass-produced gimmick. That's because Dough Doughnuts are still handmade in small batches by staff skilled in the craft of doughnut-making (via Dough Doughnuts). And it's not the first time Dough Doughnuts has stretched the boundaries of traditional doughnut combinations. The chain's year-round menu includes mouthwatering concoctions like Hibiscus, a tangy-sweet glazed doughnut topped with candied hibiscus flower, and seasonal offerings like Key Lime and S'mores.
If you're in New York City, the French's–Dough Doughnuts mustard doughnut mash-up is free, while supplies last, at six Dough Doughnuts locations: Flatiron (14 W 19th St.), Brooklyn (646 Vanderbilt Ave.), Astoria (21-70 31st St.), Rockefeller Center (10 Rockefeller Center), Urbanspace Vanderbilt (230 Park Ave.), and Smorgasburg (90 Kent Ave.). Otherwise, set your alarm for 3 p.m. (EST), August 6 — when online ordering begins.
