Wine-Infused Beer By Mikkeller

While wine snobs and beer geeks may argue about the merits of their favorite beverages, there's finally a drink that might unite both camps: wine-infused beer.

Last month marked the Stateside arrival of Evil Twin Brewing, one of Denmark's best new breweries. Head brewer Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø may not be evil, but he is, in fact, a twin: His brother is Mikkeller brew master Mikkel Borg Bjergsø. Like his brother, Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø takes a no-hops-spared approach to producing bold and bitter brews such as Before, During and After Christmas Beer and Yin and Yang, a potent stout and supercharged IPA, respectively, which were designed to be combined like the classic Black and Tan.

Jarnit-Bjergsø takes the concept of blending liquids to its delicious extreme with Disco ($10 for an 11-ounce bottle). The brewer starts by crafting a strong, rich IPA, then mixes in 10 percent Chardonnay. The beguiling result is the love child of a brew tank and a vineyard. On the nose there's the classic IPA aroma of mango, peaches and pine, but take a sticky sip, and you'll notice that the bitterness is mellowed by buttery notes of vanilla and oak.

In this case, using a wineglass is perfectly appropriate.
