Beer Advocates
A new group will guide you to better brew
If you think life's too short to drink bad beer, then let the Good Beer Seal be your guide to a better drinking life.
This brand-new organization will direct demanding drinkers to local bars and taverns that pay special attention to what they pour. In other words, when you spot the red insignia (pictured), you can rest assured that good beer resides there.
But the Good Beer Seal is more than just a stamp of approval: Dreamed up by the publicans behind three East Village watering holes--Jimmy's No. 43, Burp Castle and d.b.a.--the group intends to build a beer-loving community with promotions and special events.
For starters, d.b.a and Jimmy's are hosting CSA pickups in May and throwing "seed parties" to recruit new members (sign up at upstatefarmsny.com). The group has also declared July "Craft Beer Month," during which it will sponsor a grilling competition to benefit Slow Food USA and a fundraiser for the New Amsterdam Market at Sixpoint Brewery.
But we're most looking forward to this summer's GBS-sponsored "Bike to the Bar" days, wherein groups will hit the streets for two-wheeled bar crawls. Just remember to wear your helmet--and leave your beer goggles at home.
