The New Flavors Coming To Salt & Straw's Thanksgiving Ice Cream Line

When people visit a Salt & Straw scoop shop or buy one of its ice creams online, it usually isn't for classics like chocolate and vanilla. The ice cream company is more well-known for its unique take on flavors you wouldn't normally associate with dessert, including savory veggies and dried insects. Every season, Salt & Straw releases a new lineup of these kinds of flavors — some weirder than others — and Thanksgiving is no exception.

While pumpkin pie ice cream is always a given for the holiday, last year the chain made waves with its turkey and cranberry sauce flavor, which was introduced alongside its candied walnut cheesecake, Parker House rolls, and sweet potato pie ice creams (via Instagram). However, this Thanksgiving, Salt & Straw's candied walnut cheesecake and sweet potato pie will be replaced by two new limited-edition ice creams, according to a press release sent to Tasting Table: roasted peach and sage cornbread stuffing and Mom's Mango Pie, the latter of which was made in collaboration with podcast host and musician Hrishikesh Hirway.

Mom's Mango Pie ice cream is based on Hrishikesh Hirway's popular recipe

Back in 2019, celebrity chef, Samin Nosrat wrote a New York Times article about a dessert she ate at Hrishikesh Hirway's house, and the recipe quickly became a hit with readers. The dessert, which Nosrat dubbed "Very American Mango Pie," was a recipe Hirway's mother made every Thanksgiving that combined Indian and American culinary tradition with its use of Cool Whip, store-bought graham cracker crust, and mango pulp.

According to a press release sent to Tasting Table, this recipe eventually became the inspiration behind Salt & Straw's newest Thanksgiving flavor. It was after Hirway met Salt & Straw pastry chef Tyler Malek through a podcast interview, that the two decided to create the "Mom's Mango Pie" ice cream together. The base of Mom's Mango Pie is kulfi made with mawa, and it's flavored with Hirway's mango pie filling and Keebler graham cracker crumbs.

To get a taste of Salt & Straw's 2022 Thanksgiving flavors,  you can order through the Salt & Straw website starting November 4 through December 31.
