Deep Fried Oreos Recipe
Let's be honest for a minute — everything is better when it's deep-fried, and Oreos are no exception. You may have ordered deep-fried Oreos at a restaurant or gotten some at your local country fair, but making them at home is nearly as easy as ordering them. As an added homemade perk, these deep-fried Oreos are especially satisfying straight out of the oven, a luxury often unavailable at a fair.
Recipe developer Jennine Rye came up with this quick and easy recipe that you might want to use to impress your family and friends. "I love how simple and fun this recipe is! It only takes a few minutes to mix together a pancake batter, and then the Oreos fry really quickly. It definitely isn't the most healthy food, but they sure are delicious!" Rye raves. She also notes that these special treats "are a great and fun food choice for a party, especially a kids party, a movie night, or a sleepover."
Gather the ingredients for these deep-fried Oreos
Deep-fried Oreos require just a handful of ingredients you may already have at home. You need flour, baking powder, granulated sugar, salt, an egg, whole milk, Oreos (or a similar type of cookie), and powdered sugar. You'll also need oil for frying, and Rye uses a deep fryer for optimal ease when cooking.
Mix the dry ingredients
For this step, you will need a small bowl. Toss in the flour, baking powder, granulated sugar, and salt, and mix together to combine.
Mix the wet ingredients and combine
Grab another small bowl and add the egg and milk, whisking together to combine. Next, return to the bowl with the dry ingredients and make a well in the middle. Add the egg and milk mixture and whisk to combine. Continue mixing until everything is combined well.
Heat up the fryer and coat the Oreos
Turn the temperature of your deep-fryer up to 350 F. Then, use a fork to pierce the Oreo through the middle and dip it in the bowl with the batter. Be sure to coat the cookie really well on all slides.
"The biggest issue I have when making these, is jamming the fork into the Oreo too roughly, then causing the two halves of the biscuit to separate," Rye says. "It's a really small thing, I would just recommend being gentle when spearing the Oreos," Rye says.
Fry the Oreos
Drop each Oreo into the hot oil for 2-3 minutes, cooking until the batter puffs up and it turns a nice, golden brown color. After that, you can remove the Oreos from the oil and let them dry on an absorbent towel to remove the excess oil. Let the cookies sit for at least a minute or 2. "It's important to monitor the temperature of the oil," Rye notes. "If it's too hot the batter will brown too quickly, and if it's too cool it won't brown at all."
Serve and enjoy
Now, you can serve the Oreos to your lucky guests. Be sure to dust the cookies with powdered sugar to add even more sweetness to the dessert. "If we are being really decadent, a milkshake would be great served alongside these, to really continue the American fair food style theme," Rye shares. "They would also be great served on a platter alongside other sweet treats as a snack/dessert platter."
Be sure to enjoy these right away! "These are really best eaten fresh. If they are left too long they go a bit sad and soggy," Rye says. "You can definitely bring them back to life by refrying them so they crisp up again, but they aren't as good as when they first come out of the fryer. If you have leftovers, they keep well in the fridge for 2 to 3 days."
