The Ideal Seasoning To Spice Up Canned Tuna

There are many classic homemade sandwiches that folks have been enjoying for decades, from hot and gooey grilled cheese to savory turkey and cheese with lettuce and tomato on sourdough. But let's be honest, those recipes can get a little stale, which is why many are due for a gourmet upgrade. Just like you can punch a classic grilled cheese with bacon, pesto, and avocado or use any number of condiments to give a cold-cut sandwich the zing they so sorely need, what about the poor tuna sandwich?

The classic tuna sandwich has largely remained the same: packaged tuna mixed with mayonnaise and spread on toasted bread. While adding a kick of minced red onion and celery and assembling the sandwich with thick tomato slices and crispy lettuce leaves is a good start, you simply must let your imagination run further. Consider adding fresh dill, parsley, lemon zest, or shredded carrots for a little more flavor. While all tasty additions, we think what that creamy mayo is lacking is a spicy kick.

A pinch of pepper

To take your tuna salad to the next level, we suggest reaching into your spice rack for the jar of cayenne pepper.

All you need to do is mix as much or as little of the spice as you'd like into your mayo before combining with the canned tuna. As cayenne is a bit spicy, we suggest starting with a smaller amount and adding more and more of the ingredient, tasting as you go. If you use too much, you can always add more mayo to balance it out, but of course, it's best to nail your perfect ratio on the first try so you don't create unnecessary food waste. If you go way overboard, you could always double your recipe with another can of tuna and have leftovers for the next day. Just make sure you eat it within 5 days or so, as tuna salad can easily spoil.
