Baking Soda Will Help Clean And Polish Your Copper Mugs

A set of copper mugs makes a stunning addition to any drinkware collection. Along with being the de facto vessel for a Moscow Mule, the unique metal mug also perfectly enhances any number of beverages. Part of the appeal of copper mugs is their shiny exteriors, which unfortunately can quickly become dull if not properly cared for. Rest assured that you only need some baking soda and vinegar to restore a copper mug's bright surface.

The next time your copper mugs are plagued by water spots or tarnished areas, grab a bowl and mix up a cleaning paste using baking soda and vinegar. The paste should be composed of ¾ baking soda and ¼ vinegar. Liberally apply the paste to your copper mugs with a sponge or washcloth, then leave it alone and let the paste work its magic for at least five minutes. After no more than 10 minutes, use a sponge or cloth to gently wipe away the solution, along with any grime that has been loosened by the chemical reaction. When you're done, rinse the mugs in the sink and dry them off with a clean towel.

This cleaning paste works because when mixed at such a ratio, carbon dioxide is released from the baking soda to remove dirt and grime, while acidic vinegar acts against hard water stains. Using more baking soda than vinegar also allows the baking soda to work as a very mild abrasive, scrubbing away any impurities.

Copper mugs aren't the only kitchen items that can be cleaned with some baking soda and vinegar. Copper cookware like pots and pans will also benefit from the cleaning paste, but the process varies a bit. Start by applying a different paste made of lemon juice, salt, and water. Scrub that over your cookware, then rinse it off to give it a preliminary clean. Then, make your vinegar and baking soda solution, using a 50-50 ratio this time. From there, the process is the same: liberally apply, let it sit, scrub, rinse, and dry.

When it's not helping copper mugs, pots, and pans to gleam, baking soda can be used in all manner of cleaning projects. Whether it's a water-stained sink, dirty baking sheets, or a whole shelf of copper kitchenware, baking soda is a vital component when it comes to keeping things clean.
