Recipe developer Kristen Carli knows how to make a super tasty sandwich, and this grilled cheese is sure to be a new favorite in your home. "I love the sweet and savory combination by adding in the apples and apple butter," Carli shares. She opted to use Rave apples on the sandwich, which have a ton of health benefits. "There are so many varieties of apples," Carli raves. "I always encourage my patients to branch out and try new apples, because growers are doing such an amazing job creating new varieties. For this dish, I like a tart apple. My favorite is a Rave apple. If you cannot find that, a Granny Smith will do. Apples are filled with fiber, antioxidants, and potassium." We love a meal that has health benefits. If you're on the same boat, keep reading to find out how to make this incredible sandwich.

Gather the ingredients to prepare this apple grilled cheese

Before you start the actual prep work, you need to make sure that you gather all of the necessary items you'll need to make this tasty grilled cheese. For the most part, these items should be pretty self-explanatory, but we'll give you the rundown. Start with unsalted butter, and then add a Rave apple to your list. When you are at the store, swing by the cheese aisle, and grab a few slices of cheddar. The remaining two items that you will need for the recipe are sourdough bread and apple butter. Then, it's time to get started making this flavorful grilled cheese.

Assemble the sandwich

Now that you have all of your ingredients in front of you, you can start putting together the sandwich. This is super easy and fun to do. Just grab your sourdough bread, and spread apple butter on the top slice. "If you don't have sourdough, a white bread will do," Carli shares. Then, top the bread with apple slices. (Remember — you should have chopped these ahead of time.)

The last thing that needs to go on the sandwich is the cheese. "If you don't have cheddar cheese, I would use a Colby jack," Carli suggests. Then, put the lid, aka the top piece of bread, on the sandwich.

Heat the skillet

Now, grab a medium-sized skillet that is large enough to fit the grilled cheese with a little bit of extra room, so you're able to flip it. Place the skillet over your range, and crank the heat up to medium. After you do that, toss in the slice of butter, and listen to that sweet little sizzle. Since the pan gets hot quickly, it shouldn't take too long for the butter to melt. Make sure that the butter has fully melted before moving on to the next step. Patience is key here.

Cook the sandwich

Go ahead and add your sandwich to the skillet. This will help melt the cheese and also toast the bread at the same time. Using a lid, cover the skillet, and cook the sandwich for three minutes on the first side. Once your three-minute timer goes off, carefully flip the grilled cheese to the other side. Do your best to make sure all of the contents stay inside when you do the flip. Then, cover the skillet again, and cook for another three minutes on the other side. Be sure to check frequently to avoid burning the grilled cheese.

Serve, and enjoy

Remove the grilled cheese from the skillet once the cheese has melted. As you can see, this sandwich is a whole lot of ooey-gooey perfection. Carli recommends eating this fresh off of the press. "I love this served with a side of potato chips," Carli shares. We also think that it would be good with a side of fruit or a yummy side salad.

Sadly, leftovers won't taste that good, so therefore it's highly suggested that you eat the grilled cheese immediately. We hope you love this recipe as much as we do — especially the fun apple twist!
