Celebrate Repeal Of Prohibition Day
How to celebrate Repeal Day this year
Even now, the mere mention of Prohibition can send shivers up and down a drinker's spine.
Congress passed the 18th Amendment on January 16, 1919, and the law was in place for a dreadfully long 13 years before being repealed on December 5, 1933, by the ratification of the 21st Amendment. Here's how to celebrate the day all across the States:
New York Mixtress Julie Reiner will host a soirée at Brooklyn's Clover Club, offering featured cocktails for $8. Drink to the tunes of a 1920s-era jazz band, joined by burlesque dancers. It's the best of the Prohibition era without the need to sneak your hooch. Monday, 12/5, 8 p.m. to close; cloverclub.com
Tampa Bay, Florida The Left Coast Bartenders' Guild in Tampa Bay, Florida, is celebrating at the Don Vicente de Ybor Historic Inn, bringing in guest bartenders from around the country and donating a portion of the $75 tickets to Metro Charities and the Museum of the American Cocktail. Sunday, 12/4; click here for tickets
Washington, D.C. The D.C. Craft Bartenders Guild holds its second annual Repeal Day Ball at Halcyon House, where well-dressed revelers will gather for food, music and a cocktail or five from some of the nation's top mixologists, including Charles Joly of Chicago's Drawing Room, and Gina Chersevani of D.C.'s PS7's. A portion of the ticket proceeds supports the Museum of the American Cocktail. Saturday, 12/3, 8 p.m.; click here to join the waitlist for tickets
Los Angeles The historic French-dip spot Cole's (which conveniently acts as the front to lauded cocktail bar The Varnish) is hosting a joint bash: part 103rd-anniversary party and part Repeal Day celebration. Enjoy French dips while fishing gin punch from a bathtub-shaped ice vessel (or make your own at home with this recipe). Then watch as two of the city's prominent bartenders go head-to-head in a mixing competition. Sunday, 12/4, 9 p.m.; colesfrenchdip.com
