The Fourth of July is just around the corner, and with it comes the backyard barbecues, beach trips and family gatherings that make Independence Day a summertime favorite. If you've attended a few of these parties, you know the drill when it comes to the food: pasta salad, hot dogs, cubes of watermelon and, of course, dessert. Apparently, nothing says American spirit quite like lots of frosting and a dose of food coloring.

Red, white and blue desserts may have become a tradition for the Fourth of July, but that doesn't mean we have to suffer through another American flag sheet cake.
