The Clever Technique That Will Keep Your Donuts Fresh For Longer

Whether its a Krispy Kreme hot sign or the sweet smell of fresh donuts wafting out of a local bakery, sometimes donuts are just too tempting to pass up. And once you fall into the trap of placing an order, it is even easier to buy far more donuts than you can eat at one time. But the good news is that you can easily store those leftover donuts — whether they are cake or yeasted — so they will be fresh and ready to eat another day.

If you only have enough donuts left that you plan to eat them within a day or two, you can simply leave them on the countertop, according to Baking Kneads. But donuts will not keep well in their box. Instead, you will need to place the donuts inside an airtight, resealable container to protect them from exposure to air.

Some may choose to wrap donuts in cling wrap, but an airtight container or bag should be enough to keep the donuts moist with a light and airy texture. Take care to place the donuts in a place where they will not get sunlight and melt. Ideally, they should be kept between 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, according to Recipe Marker.

You can also store donuts in the fridge

If your home is too warm or you simply don't have a great place to stash the leftover donuts, you can always store them in the fridge. Simply follow the same directions to place them in an airtight bag or container, according to Baking Kneads. This way, the donuts can keep for up to four days. It is, however, important to keep in mind that the texture of the donuts will change a bit when exposed to the cold. They will become slightly denser, but you can always let the donuts come to room temperature before eat them for a softer donut.

Though possible, freezing donuts similarly causes the donuts to get firmer and requires a much longer thaw time. But frozen donuts can keep for up to five months. So long as you are buying donuts locally, it's probably best to simply buy some fresh ones later in time if you want more. In the meantime, you can store the donuts easily for a shorter period.
